Friendship
Yoga
was founded in 1993 by Nancy Footner, who began her studies
in 1985 at the San Francisco Iyengar Yoga Institute. The
Iyengar National Association of the United States sets rigorous
and stringent standards for teacher training and certification. (Google IYNAUS for more information about Iyengar Yoga and teacher certification) Nancy and her colleagues Jenn Bowen, and Kirsten Brooks are the only Certified Iyengar Yoga teachers in southeast Iowa. Nancy's continuing education includes ongoing training with Senior Certified Iyengar teachers as well as intensive studies at the Iyengar Institute in India in 1999, 2002, 2004, and 2011. Jenn and Kirsten study on a regular basis with senior certified Iyengar teachers.
Iyengar
Yoga
is a method of practice and instruction based on the work
of the living yoga master, B.K.S. Iyengar, who in 65 years
of practice and teaching has brought classical yoga into the
modern age. His many publications, including Light on Yoga,
are considered definitive. Iyengar Yoga is a systematic and
dynamic practice, with an emphasis on precise alignment and
therapeutics. The classes cover the full range of classical
postures and end with quiet relaxation poses. Props and modifications
are utilized, allowing access for all ages, body types, and
levels of conditioning.
Asana,
(yoga poses), the study of the physical body, is an ancient
practice, and the aspect of yoga most familiar to the Western
world.
Yoga postures develop
strength, flexibility, balance, and stamina while cultivating
discipline, courage, sensitivity, and compassion. All systems
of the body are affected: muscular, skeletal, circulatory,
respiratory, digestive, reproductive, endocrine, lymphatic,
and nervous. By diffusing awareness throughout the body,
the postures reveal what is habitually unconscious. Over
time, and with practice, extraneous tension is released
and unhealthy habits dissipate. The stillness of the poses
provides an opportunity to focus inwardly on the breath.
The close attention of the mind to body and breath enhances
concentration, reduces stress, stabilizes the emotions,
and allows for a sense of inner peace.
Classes
for every body.
The atmosphere at Friendship Yoga is calm, supportive and
safe. Classes are held in a professional, fully equipped yoga
studio. There is ample parking and space for changing clothes.
